The water heater is the one appliance in our homes that we all take for granted. This unsung hero delivers hot water for our daily shower, to clean our clothes and wash the dishes. Most of the time water heaters work perfectly, and we don’t give them a second thought. However, nothing is more frustrating than turning on the shower in the morning and getting cold water. So, when did it start to go wrong?
Fortunately, these problems can be avoided by having your water heater regularly serviced by a professional plumber. But we all lead busy lives and it’s easy to forget to arrange the annual service call. Luckily, water heaters are pretty robust and will start showing problems long before they stop working. So, what are the tell-tale signs your water heater needs a service?
Apart from a small rumbling noise when the burner is running to heat the water, your water heater should be pretty silent – so any unusual gurgling noises from the tank indicate an issue that needs to be looked at.
Gurgling noises are usually caused by a build up of sediment in the bottom of the water tank. This is the result of the anode breaking down. The anode is designed to absorb corrosion inside the tank, but they don’t last forever.
A failed anode will result in calcium build up inside the tank. This is what causes the gurgling noise. If left unchecked, calcium build up will continue until the pipes become blocked and increased corrosion will start to eat away at the tank causing leaks.
When you turn on the hot water tap, the water should be crystal clear. If the water is a rusty brown colour it could indicate corrosion inside the water tank. It’s easy to check if this is caused by corroded pipes or the hot water tank itself.
Turn on the cold water tap. If the water is discoloured for both hot and cold water the problem is likely caused by corroded pipes. If it is only the hot water that’s discoloured, then the issue is related to the water heater. Either way, you should call a plumber.
Water heaters drip from time to time – this is normal. The pressure release valve opening, and closing is the cause of the drips. This is located at the base of the water tank and is designed to relieve pressure above 150 psi and temperatures above 98ºC.
So you should only see drips when the burner is running. If you notice drips at any other time, or if you notice pools of water around the base of the tank, this is a sign of a possible leak, and you should get it checked out by a qualified plumber.
Have you noticed any of the above problems with your water heater? Then you should call a plumber to get it fixed as quickly as possible. In most cases, servicing will sort the problem out.
Leaving it will only cause the problem to get worse, making it more expensive to fix later on. For example, a faulty anode can be replaced relatively cheaply… but, if left, it can cause the tank to corrode from the inside out which will ultimately require a new tank.
