Understanding how your plumbing works is a big responsibility and one that’s important for any homeowner as it helps you identify potential problems and keep things working like they should.
Keep reading for the basics.
Cold Water Supply
This makes up the main part of your plumbing system. When it’s installed, a water pipe is connected to the city’s water supply, where it is hooked up to a water meter and then branches out into the many other pipes that make up your plumbing system.
There are also emergency shut off valves placed in various places to prevent burst pipes from creating huge problems. When you turn on your cold water tap, this is where that water comes from.
Hot Water Supply
Your hot water is created by your hot water tank, which is located somewhere in your home and can be adjusted to get your water the ideal temperature for your needs.
The tank features an inlet that lets the cold water in and then heats it up so that when you turn on your hot water taps, the water comes out heated for cleaning, bathing and cooking. You don’t have separate pipes for hot water and cold water.
The cold water moves through the pipes and into the hot water tank where it’s heated and then moved back through the pipes and out of your faucets.
Drains
Anywhere you have a water supply, you should also have a drain, including in tubs, sinks and toilets.
When you put items down the drain, they move through the pipes and into the city’s sewer system. All the drains in your home work their way to the main drain, which is then moved into the sewer.
Typically, a valve is placed at this main drain opening to keep foul smells from coming up through the drains and into your home. Putting things down the drain that can’t fit or that aren’t designed to be flushed can clog your pipes and your main drain so be sure you only flush approved items.
